SwimSafer Program Singapore

Steady Swim School provides SwimSafer lessons for individuals of all ages and abilities across Singapore. 

Introduced in 2010, Swimsafer is a National Water Safety Council initiative that is Singapore’s most successful learn-to-swim programme, recognised by all schools, institutions, and water-related sports nationwide.

What is the SwimSafer Programme?

SwimSafer is Singapore’s national water safety programme. Dedicated to increasing water proficiency across the country, the programme encourages swim safety and educates people about the importance of water safety. 

The programme has six stages which work to develop water skills and knowledge from beginner to advanced levels during swimming lessons. During each stage, swimming students receive certifications to acknowledge their achievements.

SwimSafer Stages and Certifications

Swimsafer Stage 1: Introduction to Water Skills

The objective is to develop confidence and independence in the water, learn general and deep-end water safety. Techniques taught include the forward and backward movement, safe entry and exit and personal water safety.

SwimSafer Stage 2: Fundamental Water Skills

General skill development including unassisted step entry into water, sculling, feet first surface dives, personal water safety skills as well as water safety in aquatic environments. Goal is to achieve 25 metres of continuous swimming.

SwimSafer Stage 3: Personal & Stroke Development Skills

Principles of personal survival as well as basic rescue skills are taught. Skills include sculling, underwater skills and the use of a personal flotation device. The goal is to achieve 50m of continuous swimming.

SwimSafer Stage 4 – Bronze: Personal Survival & Stroke Improvement Skills

The focus in stage 4 is the development of child’s stroke techniques, along with coordinated breathing in deep water while swimming 100 metres. Principles of watercraft safety will be introduced as well as continual work on rescue and personal survival skills.

SwimSafer Stage 5 – Silver: Intermediate Personal Survival & Stroke Refinement Skills

Introduction of the fundamentals of diving. Development of rescue skills and personal survival knowledge will also continue at more advanced levels. Children will be required to demonstrate efficient stroke techniques to complete stage 5.

SwimSafer Stage 6 – Gold: Advance Personal Survival & Swimming Skill Proficiency

Children will be required to perform strokes with greater ease, efficiency, power over 400 metres. The final stage will focus on rescue skills, water safety knowledge, and overall lifesaving readiness. It will also include lessons on standing dives and general personal safety skills in the water.

Is SwimSafer compulsory in Singapore?

Yes. Under the National Water Safety Council, participating in the SwimSafer programme is compulsory for primary school students in Singapore. However, some schools allow students who take private swimming lessons outside of school to opt-out.

How long does it take to complete SwimSafer?

The SwimSafer programme generally takes up to nine months to complete if the participant attends 45-minute lessons every week. The duration of the program will ultimately depend on the progress made from each stage.

What swimming skills will be taught in the SwimSafer programme?

During the SwimSafer programme, students will learn and develop various swimming and water safety skills. The lessons cover floating, treading water, diving, personal survival techniques, and swim strokes like freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

Can adults do the SwimSafer programme?

Of course! Adults can participate in the SwimSafer program along with children and teenagers. The programme is catered to everyone at different abilities and experience levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers.

What happens after completing SwimSafer in Singapore?

After completing the SwimSafer programme, participants can choose to further their water safety knowledge and swimming skills by attending weekly private or group swimming lessons.
